Interview: Author Colleen Oakley of Before I Am Going
This month, journalist Colleen Oakley publishes her debut novel, Before I Am Going, a poignant take a look at problems with dying, existence, coping, and releasing. I spoken with her about craft and making the transition from true existence to fiction.
On writing through tears
Penning this book was an very emotional experience. There have been many occasions which i left my office/guest room/small desk within the corner with red-rimmed eyes and alarmed my hubby that something terrible had happened. “The book!” I’d say, through tears. “It’s only the book!” Looking back, I believe that could have alarmed him much more-which i was that emotionally committed to people who don’t really exist.
On dark humor
Emotional situations cause me to feel terribly uncomfortable, so I’m usually that girl within the corner who’s constantly cracking jokes-at occasions, very inappropriately-to lighten the atmosphere.
I spend considerable time convincing myself that I’m an okay mother despite the fact that I do not craft my very own sock puppets or create chocolate buffets in my kids’ kids birthday parties that appear to be like something from Martha Stewart Weddings.
On fiction versus. fact
I’ve been writing fiction since i have could hold a pencil-or crayon, so to speak. My mother continues to have tales I authored from preschool forward. But I’ve got a very practical side and understood when I needed to aid myself, I’d require a “real” job, and that’s why I received my degree in journalism and entered magazines in my career.
I interviewed an incredible Atlanta radiologist, Dr. Chad Levitt, who walked me through very detailed diagnoses, treatments, and possible outcomes in my protagonist. I possibly could not have access to written it without his expertise.
On her behalf fantasy cast inside a movie version
Within my wildest dreams, I picture Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as Daisy and Jack. They’ve amazing on-screen chemistry and the like heart-clutching vulnerability within their acting. And That I reach satisfy the actors, right?
On her behalf childhood studying habits
The typical suspects: Nancy Came, Sweet Valley High, Baby-Sitters Club, Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Lois Duncan. In senior high school, I experienced an Erectile dysfunction McBain phase, that we think impressed my parents simply because they were such adult novels, however i secretly only read them for that sex scenes.
Around the first book she ever loved
In the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Tulsi E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. That title! How may you not love that book in line with the title alone? Also, I had been a complete rule-follower like a youthful kid-I remedied that in senior high school-and that i was at slack-jawed awe of Claudia’s rebellious independence.
On her behalf current literary heroes
I really like my fellow Atlantans-Emily Giffin, Lynn Cullen, Joshilyn Jackson, Karin Slaughter, Karen White-colored. There’s a lot writing talent within this city! Also around the narrow your search: Lionel Shriver, Curtis Sittenfeld, Ann Patchett, Stephen King, JoJo Moyes, Ian McEwan, Hillary Jordan, Wally Lamb, Steve Martin, Michael Crichton, Khaled Hosseini, Audrey Niffenegger-I possibly could work for days. I really like from historic fiction to crime to drama to dystopian fantasies.
On the perfect day
At this time, an ideal day is every day that does not start and finish with vomiting. Twin pregnancy isn’t the easiest factor I’ve ever done.
On her behalf next project
I’m presently writing a manuscript in regards to a lady who’s a clinical marvel: She’s allergic with other people. It’s likely to be really amazing-or really terrible. Depends at the time you’re asking.
